Everybody's Son
Can't be more topical than this story: powerful, political, white upper-class family adopts biracial kid. Takes advantage of his poor black mother and lets the system swallow her up. Raises a super successful kid who's had all the advantages society can offer. Shows us how a biracial child might survive in an all-white privileged environment.
Characterizations are finely drawn. Author is from India which probably grants her first-hand experience with being the "other."
Reader left with puzzle of how to offer every child an enriched experience in what is definitely not a classless society.
Engrossing read!
